The Oldest Derbyshire Pub

Darley Abbey Village is located north of Derby in a small peaceful town founded around 1146. The Darley Abbey Derbyshire pub actually dates back to the early 12th century and is thought to be the oldest standing building of its kind today. The Darley Abbey Pub has a longstanding reputation as it was once among the most important with the town’s people. Unfortunately during the Dissolution of Monasteries treaty in 1538, its ownership was forfeited. Much of the architecture in the area was destroyed in just a few years after the treaty was made. The Darley Abbey Pub remained standing, but abandoned and desolate for many years.

There is a rich and historical culture with the Darley Abbey Pub. It’s rumoured to have obtained its name from Norman Abbey of St Mary of Darley, which dates back to 1137. The Darley Abbey is widely regarded as the most powerful and richest Abbeys of all Derbyshire UK. In addition, the ownership of the Darley Abbey Derbyshire pub travels into neighbouring towns as far as Nottingham and Staffordshire, and it was once used by the monastery as a bake house and brewery.

In 1979 the building was restored and the Darley Abbey Pub as we know it today was formed. When you visit this Derbyshire pub you will see that its original spiral stone staircase and beehive bread oven are still intact. Some 12th century pottery was also discovered during the renovation process. Records indicate that from 1932 to 1977, the Darley Abbey Pub had been left abandoned and unoccupied until the recent restoration when it was made open to the public. As you travel to the Darley Abbey Derbyshire pub you are sure to get a feeling of olden day England. If you want to be guaranteed seating you must get there rather early as it is quite popular among the locals, but during the summer months there is plenty of seating in the outside café.
